BluesFestival > inanga  > Family > Welcome to Jville (Johnsonville). Where I live...
Thanks for the invitation to your Blues Festival community - a little about me (a blues lover) - and the place I live in (my actual community) - inanga.

I live in Jville (Johnsonville), Aotearoa (New Zealand) and I derive a lot of inspiration from my immediate surroundings. Johnsonville, as suburbanly interesting as it is, can be found on the attached Google map. Just zoom in, go to New Zealand (where there are a lot of flags), zoom in again close to Wellington, and just to the north-west is Jville. If you came in by something like 'Jeff Jville' you may wish to view more of my art - CLICK ' > inanga >' at top left of this page.

Have you ever heard the band Dave Warner and From the Suburbs, a Western Australian band, sing 'I'm just a suburban boy, And I know what it's like to be rejected every night...' Jville's a bit like that...

Enjoy Jville NZ - I continue to do so.

inanga > Shadows in the Valley

photographic treatment of 'Lady of the Valley'

I probably spent more time with this painting than most before I decided that I had finished it. The reason was that I never really knew what I wanted to paint when I secured the frame and board.

So this explanation is more about the evolution of a painting than a deeper symbolic rave. I am listening to Neil Young’s 'Like a Hurricane', streamed through to my partner’s living room on U-Tube as I write thinking about ‘Lady of the Valley’, just being titled now. My nearby speakers are just feasting out 'Peace Frog' by The Doors. I have to replay it as I write this to get an exact as possible translation – U-Tube on the world wide Spider Grandmother’s Web is most gracious on this occasion and the glorious syncopation of a petition to the Lord to prayer is heard. And God through his flesh and blood Our Christ calls through the voice of Jim Morrison and my finger presses hard on left click of the Mouse to recall lines on a video screen

‘Blood in the streets the town of Newhaven,
Blood stains the roofs, and the palm trees in Venice
Blood in the streets up to my ankles
Blood in the streets up to my knees…’

When the wind blows down Nauranga Gorge it is truly like a hurricane and only our Almighty God would know what he, she or it Unknown has instructed his god Tawhiri Matea to deliver ungraciously upon the sacred summit of Maungakaukau. Maungakaukau, called by the crow ‘Caw caw’, and more commonly Holy Two Cows. Blood was spent upon this peak, the gateway to Aotearoa, known by the dray drivers of old as 'Mount Misery'.

I met a lady and she lived in a valley, in the shadow of Maungakaukau. The shadow was known as Cortina Avenue, and the town arrayed on all sides of it was Johnsonville. I am looking out of it now as I think about the evolution of a painting. Neil Young croons in the background on U-Tube and I wonder if I am old enough to repaint and young enough to sell. I find it hard to make that arrangement with myself when neither wishing to be repainted or sold.

And how is about this painting?

It was repainted. I had painted it initially as a brush fire on the slopes of Kau Kau and was given to J and L about the time their firstborn picked them as parents four days before he was conceived. He thought this good as he had an Italian-Kiwi for a mum and a Boer ‘Yarpie’ South African as a dad. Oh to live on Sugar Mountain with the Boers and the Ps and the coloured balloons.

My lady of the valley is Ms P, an Italian from Runanga in the South Island and a Scot from Ohariu Valley on the way to Makara Beach. I met her in Jville at a meeting and this piece about a painting is being written in her living room. I like that – a living room, a room alive, the TV, U-Tube, Neil Young singing 'The Needle and the Damage Done'. She told me the painting was not finished as the frame was shot. I looked at it hanging in the Boers and agreed. So out it came first to a store room in Jville, then to the Heath Street Flats and then up to Newlands.

At Newlands, overlooking Kau Kau and the Ngauranga Gorge, I repainted the brush fire through the gorse. The final painting began to evolve. First, a group of kids that grew up in the valley began to have their say. U-Tube serves up Eric Clapton singing and slow-handing 'Layla'. The kids have me on my knees and I begging God Almighty ‘Please’. They throw acrylic into the lower corners and create the hair of the lady of the valley. It is Maungakaukau at its most furious and the providence of God most divine. Ms P watches carefully to see that the kids don’t splatter paint all over her well-kempt, tidy little nest.

I hit the hills with spray paint and the kids swirled acrylic into oil. Phi was being spun by our Almighty God through the telecommunications tower at the top of the mountain. It was put away in storage and I wondered what was going to become of it. It had to be completed and returned to the Boers.

The day I wrote this piece I finished the simple black frame that surrounds Lady of the Valley. Also on that day J Boer picked up the painting. She smiled at me when she saw me on the steps at her sister’s. When hung as a landscape you have the valley; when hung as a portrait you have the lady. Ozzie Osbourne makes me 'Paranoid' on U-Tube. The writing is complete but my day is not over. I am off to work as the night porter at a Wellington backpackers‘.
