Aotearoa 1 - New Zealand

My country is Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud - more recently known as New Zealand. These paintings of Whai Repo (the North Island), a big part of Aotearoa - a beautiful place on earth in which to Be. See Gallery: Aotearoa II (South Island) also. Whai Repo is the 'Stingray', not someone asking you to go out and repossess a vehicle. If you look at Kiwiland from high up in the atmosphere you will see the Stingray - Northland is the Tail, the area around Wellington Harbour the Head, and Taranaki and East Cape the Fins. The Maori knew its shape long before satellites, otherwise they wouldn't have called it the Stingray.

[This gallery needs a lot of work, sorting and that sort of thing. To surf one of the other galleries - go to top left and CLICK ' > inanga >'].

Enough of the technical, sit back and enjoy Whai Repo (the Stingray) on your HD screen.

inanga > All Roads lead to Aotearoa

Hard to imagine that each icon depicted above involves a painting - but it does. A lot of travel - independent and for Lonely Planet - was behind this prolonged world tour. i like the way that the red lines linking the timeline feature seem to bring me home to Aotearoa.

Tat tvam asi - dedicated to Skully, mate of Christian Cullen, famous Kiwi racehorse, rugby player and member of the ACNZ. More on Christian Cullen later.

In Kiwiland we claim the great Phar Lap as ours. He was born near Temuka but we have only managed to get hold of his bones. Although he was poisoned in the US at Agua Calientes his hide is preserved in the Victorian Museum in Melbourne, Australia. His heart is somewhere in a jar at the Institute of Anatomy in Canberra, also in Australia. Last time i saw his skeleton it was on Level Two, i think, near the Library section of Our Place, in Te Papa, our repository of the wisdom of the trees (Whanganui-a-Tara). Try www.tepapa.govt.nz for more (when they have loaded up details on Phar Lap to serve this feed. You will learn heaps about the 'colossal squid' on that page. How many bowls of calamari would you get out of this?

Cosmopolitan traveler to say the least, even after death.

Wherever you are Skully, thanx for the view of the tuataras on the Aldermen Islands and the ghost of Billy Sampson at Sailor's Grave.

UNFOLDING FERNS

I have been
Long away
From this land of mine
But i am reminded
Every time
The fern unfolds
That Aotearoa
Is my home.

I have been
Long away
from your shores
Your green forests
And majestic mountains
But i remember them
As if i saw them
Yesterday

Now i am back
In my Aotearoa
i watch the ferns
Unfolding
In a dance
Of welcome

i am no longer
Far away
From this land
Of mine.

i AM IN TE AWAMUTU

Dedicated to Tim and Neil Finn for their lilting beautiful lyrics -

You better be home soon
No lies, no deception
You come back
To me
In Te Awamutu
You told me you would
And i ask you again
As you said
i should.

You better be home soon
i am playing in the roses
Not far from Woolworths
A ticket
You couldn't miss
For all the money
On earth.

Come home soon
To Te awamutu
Where i can Be
With you
i am in Te Awamutu
Calling to you.

To Neil and Tim, please see my Seasons gallery - it comes from 'four seasons in one day').
