Aotearoa 1 - New Zealand

My country is Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud - more recently known as New Zealand. These paintings of Whai Repo (the North Island), a big part of Aotearoa - a beautiful place on earth in which to Be. See Gallery: Aotearoa II (South Island) also. Whai Repo is the 'Stingray', not someone asking you to go out and repossess a vehicle. If you look at Kiwiland from high up in the atmosphere you will see the Stingray - Northland is the Tail, the area around Wellington Harbour the Head, and Taranaki and East Cape the Fins. The Maori knew its shape long before satellites, otherwise they wouldn't have called it the Stingray.

My doctor at the Te Aro clinic in Upper Willis Street, Wellington, was called Jenny. I inherited her when Doctor Pat left. If ever the spirit of Mother Teresa existed in downtown Wellington it was in this clinic for the poor, homeless, drunk, drugged and almost forgotten. The core of their true humility seemed to stem from a close association with the Salvation Army.

They are the only people who seem to care about fools and drunks apart from the Almighty. I was painting when I first started going to the clinic but my stuff hadn’t yet benefitted from my sobriety and lacked the refinement of later swirling.

But the fighter still remains…

My apologies to Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel for messing up their sublime lyrics, but their gentle harmony is working overtime. The picture 'Mountain Tarn, Central Plateau', was given to Jenny for helping to restore the fighter in me. 

These pictures sweep their own magic when they are instruments in a hand. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and the tarn on Tongariro took on a reasonable likeness of the selves we understand them to be. They were there when Tauponui-a-Tara darkened the world’s skies in 186 AD in the biggest recorded explosion ever. They were there when the Battle of the Trees was fought between the trees of the Nation and the invading pine trees. They were there when the region became the world’s second designated national park. Thank you Horonuku Te Heuheu Tukino, paramount chief of the Ngati Tuwharetoa, you were a Kiwi of true vision as far back as 1887. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us to see this land as it always was.

Now, in another form, the three majestic peaks of the Central Plateau look out over Jenny’s domain. Thank you for your help Jenny and enjoy the painting.

I had painted a number of scenes that exhibited these smooth divisions of colour. This painting was no different – order out of a Phi chaos. The gold on Ruapehu’s slopes is a glitter-laced paint, and it was the last time I used it. In most other places the various paints are applied as bold splashes, especially in the sky.

Some time ago I paddled down the Tongariro River from Turangi to Lake Taupo. Each time I looked over my shoulder as I got further out on the lake I could see the massif of the Central Plateau behind me.

This is a stylized version of what I saw – Pihanga, Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe and Tongariro standing proudly and the ravine of the Tongariro River and the bluest of skies. It was May 2004 and I was on my second honeymoon. I was alone on this inland sea and felt as much at peace as was possible in those last days of my active alcoholism.

When you walk on any of these mountains the thing that strikes you is the reds, oranges, grays and whites of the volcanic scoria. Each mountain was created with simple strokes of oil and acrylic over thick gesso to achieve a realistic recreation of each mountain if you were close up to it.

The painting happened quickly and the lake fashioned itself in one swirl. It looks peaceful in this representation but in 186AD it was the scene of the largest recorded volcanic eruption in the world’s history. The lake is the crater of that massive explosion. The skies were so red at the time that they featured on Chinese calendars of the period.

Almost at the moment that I completed this work I turned on the TV to learn that a father and son had tragically drowned where the Tongariro River enters the lake. I had only seen the river from the water level of a kayak, but I thought its labyrinthine final reaches could easily become a trap for small boats.

Phil saw the final brush strokes and decided that she would hang this piece in the stairwell of her house in Newlands, Wellington.
